Stakčín is an excellent starting point for hiking, cycling and discovering north-eastern Slovakia.

Kremenec and the Stužica primeval forest

A marked trail leads from Nová Sedlica through the Stužica primeval forest to Kremenec, where the borders of Slovakia, Poland and Ukraine meet. It is a longer trip for hikers who want to experience the quiet Carpathian landscape to the fullest.

Ďurkovec and Riaba skala

The route from Runina climbs to the mountain meadows around Ďurkovec and the viewpoint at Riaba skala. Open views over the valleys and rounded Poloniny ridge are the reward; allow a full day for this trip as well.

Sninský kameň and Morské oko

Several routes lead to Sninský kameň from Snina, Zemplínske Hámre and Morské oko. The final ascent to the rock platforms uses metal ladders and opens up broad views across the Vihorlat Mountains.

Cycling from Stakčín

Along the former narrow-gauge railway

The green-marked section from Stakčín to Šponáreň is about nine kilometres long and follows the former forest railway. It can be combined with other cycle routes towards Sninské rybníky or Poloniny.

Starina and Ruské sedlo

Cycle routes run alongside the Starina drinking-water reservoir, through the former villages and towards Ruské sedlo. Part of the way follows the historic stone road Porta Rusica, combining nature with the story of the vanished valley.

The astronomical observatory lies in Poloniny Dark-Sky Park. Daytime tours introduce its work, while evening programmes offer sky observation; advance booking is required.
